If you have been reading this blog regularly, you are familiar with this series, in the last blog, I gave an overview of the concept of home based businesses and in this blog I shall list out five simple steps for starting a home based business.
Business Idea
You need an idea to start a business, its always advisable for home based businesses to select an idea of interest. However, for a small business copying a successful idea is a good approach. Look out for other small businesses and identify the ones that are making money, you can modify their strategies and give them some competition.
Business Plan
Small or large, irrespective of the size of a business, a business plans holds the same importance. Without a business plan you’ll be just hitting around the bushes. A business plan allows you to identify threats and opportunities for your business and be prepared for the same.
Finance
Once you have selected an idea and prepared the business plan, you need to assess the financial requirements of your business and drawing a financial plan will be very helpful as it can save you from a lot of trouble in the future. If you have prepared a good business plan, you already half way through towards financing your home business. Loans from banks are not easy to obtain, the options left are family, friends and relatives or angel investors.
Structure
Small businesses usually need not incorporate themselves, however a lot of home business owners incorporate their business these days just so that their prospective clients have one more reason to trust them. Small businesses can easily be incorporated as Limited Liability Companies as it allows owners to enjoy liability protection similar to a Corporation and Partnership firm without the complications.
Operations
Unless and until you are able to manage the overheads properly, you are not likely to succeed in your home business venture. To make profit and remain profitable due care has to be given to managing overheads, cutting costs and optimum utilization of available resources.
